Dr. Paul Young is a board-certified ENT, which means he is qualified to treat all disorders affecting the ears, nose, and throat–including allergies in both adults and children. Because he can assess all of your needs with a comprehensive exam, you can make one trip to our office rather than booking appointments with an allergist and an ENT.

A perpetually stuffed or runny nose may not mean you have allergies though. It could just as easily be another ENT-related condition. We commonly see sinusitis, rhinitis, nasal polyps, and deviated septums as well. With his experience and knowledge of the field, Dr. Paul Young can identify the cause of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan just for you.

F.A.Q.

Can you cure me of allergies?
The body has the incredible capacity to fight off diseases, but sometimes it marks harmless substances like dust, animal dander, and pollen as dangerous pathogens. Allergens, unlike bacterial and viral infections, are usually not entirely avoidable.

While you can do your best to minimize your exposure to the allergen, chances are you can’t reduce contact with your trigger altogether. Some do outgrow allergies, especially if they develop them at a young age. Otherwise, there are a number of treatment options that can alleviate the symptoms and even put your allergies into remission. That way they lie dormant even if they are still present.

What can I do at home to relieve allergy symptoms?
If your symptoms aren’t severe, you might not even need to visit our allergy clinic here in Buffalo, NY. You should consider simply taking extra precautions around the home and in your neighborhood to mitigate the effects allergens have on your life.

Besides avoiding cigarette smoke and keeping a healthy diet, you can keep firewood and any potted plants outside to rid your house of pollen. You may also consider washing shower curtains regularly and removing laundry from the dryer promptly to prevent mold from growing in damp clothing.

When should I seek treatment for allergies?
If you’ve been experiencing symptoms for more than a week, you’re probably not suffering from a cold. You can recognize a cold by a few key signs. Symptoms come on in stages, mucus is usually yellow or green from infection, and if the cold is severe enough, you may even run a fever.

Between 40 and 60 million Americans deal with allergies every year, and the majority of cases don’t ever require medical treatment. They can usually be controlled by over-the-counter medications and simple lifestyle changes.

However, in some instances, symptoms can become gradually more severe. If over-the-counter medications are no longer effective, you may have to contact a medical professional. If your allergies make it impossible for you to normally carry out daily activities, then it may be time to stop by our Buffalo allergy clinic. In extreme cases, allergies can result in severe reactions known as anaphylaxis, which may involve wheezing, low blood pressure, hives, and vomiting. Allergies can even be fatal if left untreated.

What can I expect from allergy diagnostic exams?
After a thorough physical exam and an analysis of your health history, an ENT will run a series of skin and blood tests to identify your triggers. Skin tests provide immediate results and can identify rare or elusive culprits.

However, your physician may require a blood test if your skin is extremely sensitive to the allergen or you are already taking some other medication that would affect the results of a skin test.

How effective are allergy shots?
Allergy shots, also known as a form of immunotherapy, have been around since 1911. While there is no vaccine for allergies, immunotherapy has been proven to reduce symptoms by up to 60-70%.

The traditional process involves a series of injections that expose your body to the allergen in increasingly heavy doses so that it will eventually become immune. The immunotherapy may also be taken orally at home.

Since immunotherapy involves exposing your body to its trigger, you may experience mild symptoms while your body adjusts. You should be in contact with your practitioner to discuss any side effects.
